2022 - Issue 28

Showcasing artists and works that caught my attention.

Images 1-2 = I was captivated by the small, soft pastels from Sophie Ruigrok (@sophie.ruigrok). There’s something about the copper colours that makes these lifelike figures appear oddly artificial, possibly even alien? They’re in a group show that isn’t actually about cats, also featuring Anousha Payne (@anoushapayne), Cheri Smith (@chchcheri), Katarina Caserman (@casermankatarina) and Shafei Xia (@shafeixia)

It is Better to be Cats than be Loved’ at Tabula Rasa (@tabularasa_gallery) until 06 Aug

Images 3-4 = Moi Tran presents a series of banners, two hours of video and sixty hours of audio that loops through the gallery. All untranslated and without context. It’s a celebration of sound, and intentionally unruly. Captured predominantly from East and Southeast Asian communities, there’s a recording booth on site where anyone of any heritage can contribute their own poem, song, story… or even just a sound.

Civic Sound Archive’ at Peer Gallery (@peergallery) until 03 Sep

Images 5-7 = It’s hard not to be immediately drawn to the large relief wall full of resin figures from Eric Pina, that seem to have been lifted, out of context, from a bustling street scene. It’s one of the many works in this figurative group show that also includes striking photography and the sparse, captivating works of Sola Olulode (@SolaOlulode). The serenity and peace that I see in her figures is calming, and left me yearning to achieve that feeling.

Summer Show #1’ at Ed Cross Fine Art (@edcrossfineart) until 17 Aug

Images 8-10 = While ‘psychedelic’ might be the most appropriate adjective, it’s hard for me not to read these Ross Taylor (@ross__taylor_____) works as an indictment of global warming. Coming off the back of the UK heatwave, during which these were hung, their unnatural colours remind me of scorched earth. Rocky landscapes bend and blur behind leafless stumps, as if it’s all melting from the heat.

Time of the Season’ at Beers (@beerslondon) until 03 Sep
