New (or new to me) Gallery Reviews (No. 2)
Here are six more galleries that I recently visited for the very first time. Some are brand new-ish (e.g. opened within the last 12-18 months) and the rest are simply new to me. Some of them I only just learned about even though they may been operating for a decade or more, while others have been patiently waiting for me to come visit. Sorry it took me so damn long!
All of these are permanent spaces (e.g. not pop-ups) but many of them have limited or restricted opening hours.
⚠️ Please be sure to check the venue website and/or Instagram to confirm opening days/times before you visit. ⚠️
If you know of other art spaces that have recently opened, or that I haven’t yet visited, please get in touch.
NORTH
Camden, Kentish Town, Islington, Finsbury, Stoke Newington, Walthamstow, etc.
〰
Large Glass / @largeglassgallery (Caledonian Road & Barnsbury)
It’s been going since 2011 but I’d only just visited because I’d always assumed, based on the name, that this venue would be a specialist in small decorative works of ceramic or glass. They actually present a wide range of medium, although photography is noted as a “particular specialism” and since all their shows run for a generous two months (ish) you’ve got no excuse not to miss any of them.
〰
Twilight Contemporary / @twilight_contemporary (Canonbury)
Just over a year old, this brand new gallery in North Islington has two floors to enable them to serve up a generous helping of emerging and early career artists in London. They also run a Twilight Lates series of social events (e.g. comedy, salsa nights, etc) on Thu, Fri and Sat evenings. This friendly and ambitious venue is definitely worth a visit.
EAST
Bethnal Green, Cambridge Heath, Clerkenwell, Farringdon, Holborn, Hoxton, Shoreditch, Whitechapel… basically anything else east of Goodge Street
〰
Interval (Clerkenwell)
A Georgian townhouse has been thoughtfully renovated into a ground floor & basement gallery (run by father & son) and a home above (for dad & mum). Opened in late 2025, this brand new venture plans to run approx. four shows a year while they settle in to the space and develop their programme, and they’re incredibly warm and welcoming to new visitors.
〰
Ruup & Form / @rupp.and.form (Old Street)
With a focus on ceramics and textiles, one medium sized room is more than enough space to display the super high quality work this gallery presents via mostly group shows, with an occasional solo. To enter you’ll need to get through the big metal gate outside a short alley, but if the gallery sandwich board is out then just give that gate a push as it’s probably unlocked. Wonders await!
SOUTH
Anything South of the Thames.
〰
Sim-Smith / @simsmith_ (Camberwell) — Originating as an online venture, this gallery has been on the periphery of my radar for quite some time because it’s also on the periphery of public transport. (e.g. bus or 15 min walk from nearest Tube/Rail stations.) Your Oyster card and step count will thank you for the visit because it’s a super friendly gallery and since it’s spread across two joined up spaces in Camberwell Passage there’s plenty of room to display their exciting programme of artists and shows.
〰
William Hine / @williamhinegallery (Camberwell) — Manchester-born Hine founded his own gallery in Autumn 2024 after previously holding positions at three Mayfair blue chips, so expectations are understandably high for this new venture that aims to focus on British contemporary artists with little or no previous commercial exposure.
